Oil and gas methane and air pollution harms the health and welfare of Texans across the state. We respectfully request TCEQ keep its commitment and publish a proposed rule to limit this pollution.
LET TCEQ KNOW THAT TEXANS WANT SMART METHANE MANAGEMENT
In 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued a rule to limit methane pollution from the oil and gas industry. These new standards include measures to address two of the largest sources of pollution in the oil and gas industry: regular inspections to find leaks at all well sites and a phase-out of intentionally polluting equipment widely used across the industry. The rule also includes a program to quickly address the largest emission events detected by third parties and limits on the wasteful and polluting practice of flaring of gas at oil wells, which is all too common in Texas.
Under federal law, states are required to develop plans to deliver those protections. In the fall of 2024, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) began a process to engage with stakeholders to gather input before developing a state rule to cut emissions. TCEQ committed to publishing a draft by August 2025 for public comment.
However, political bureaucrats in Washington have already indicated a delay and possible weakening of federal standards to cut oil and gas methane and air pollution. So we are requesting that TCEQ sticks to its commitment and publishes a draft rule for comment by this August to limit oil and gas pollution.
Please personalize your message TCEQ to show why you care about limiting climate and air pollution from the oil and gas industry. You could consider the health, climate, or economic impacts of methane pollution and what that looks like in your community. We will deliver them all messages and petition signatures to TCEQ in September.
